I don't see what your problem is. If I switch off the numlock on my keyboard, the numbers an the right don't work...just as Amatambo said, and the whole Alt + numbers thing doesn't work if you use the numbers on the top. Now wind your bloody neck in and realise that you are not the be all and end all of every bloody thing in the world.

NUM LOCK ON and I can type {╚▀§

Bullshit!  It makes no difference whether NumLock is on or off!

Also, you can only use the numeric keypad, not the numbers across the top of the qwerty keyboard!

FAIL!!!

ALL-right, let me post this once again for the ?????? time?

For those who are not familiar with the Ascii text codes, here are the most common ones.  Make sure Num Lock is on, then hold down the Alt key and type in the numerical code to get whatever you are looking for on the small keypad on the right – the one in the top row of the main keys doesn’t work. This works for all Microsoft Word programmes – I am not familiar with other word processing programmes and whether the codes would work there too.

And for Laptops (HP) hold  Fn AND Alt down while pressing the keys marked with blue numbers - U for 4, I for 5 etc.

This feature works for all the word processors I know of (Even Linux).  It works for programs written for some of the older operating systems as well.

Am I imagining it, or are those codes a bit skewed with a slight gradient to the right?  Or is it just an optical illusion???

Jip a HP 6910.  The BLUE Fn key is between the windows key and the Cnlt key.  Very handy extra functions.  Used to switch to dual screens (Fn +F4)

Between the Crtl and Alt key on your left is a key markewd in blue as Fnpressing this will give you keypad functions the numerical keyboard is then marked in blue M,> ,?,j etc.  So to get special characters like ê you would keep Fn and Alt pressed while typing 136 (JLO)

Are you on a laptop, Dutchie?  Fn = Function.

On a regular keyboard, that key is the "Windows" key. No need to press it to get the special character, though. You only need Alt+136 or whatever character you desire.

For what it's worth, Ouma R Tambo, the Num Lock daoes not have to be "on".

Ek sê maar net ...

Yes it does, if you intend using the number pad on the right hand side of the keyboard.

now if you are using an laptop with no numlock key what do you use

I believe you have to use the Fn key?  I remember that it was a cumbersome process when I last used a laptop.
